This course consists of two modules:

  • Self-harm
  • Substance misuse

This course is for anyone who works with, or has regular contact with, children and young people, but it is also applicable to a general audience. There has been alarming increase in cases of self-harm and substance misuse in young people. This insightful course covers the subject of self-harm from a variety of angles and will enable candidates to understand drugs, its effects and the recovery process.

Module One: Self-Harm

The module is split into two parts: An Introduction, and How to Respond. This module explains the common reasons why a young person might self-harm and how to respond when you suspect somebody is self-harming. It also explains best practice for approaching the subject in education and healthcare settings.

Candidates will learn the risk factors, the common reasons why somebody might self-harm, and how to respond to any young person who may be suspected of self-harming. The module also discusses how to approach the issue in schools and how professionals can feel better prepared to help the young people they come into contact with.

Module Two: Substance Misuse

This module contains three parts: Substance Awareness, Addiction, Treatment and Good Practice and The Effect of Drugs on the Body and Mind. It module is an introductory in nature, however it is also intended for all people who want to improve their knowledge and continue their professional development. The module contains additional resource materials, useful links and a refresher guide. It will empower candidates with the understanding of how drugs work, how their use affects people and their families and how addicts can be helped to recover.
